Mrs. King has more than 21 years of experience teaching art—11 years for the Chicago Park District and the last 11 for the Chicago Public Schools. In 2010, she was selected "Most Outstanding Teacher of the Year" at Kellogg Elementary. In 2012, Ellen decided to create a summer program where children are inspired to develop their creativity. Her vision was to bring learning and fun together during the summer months in a pressure-free environment. Mrs. King aims to give students a way to develop their creative expression while cultivating friendships and experiencing the wonders of nature.
ABOUT THE TEACHER (Session 2)
Lisa Pennell has spent the past six school years teaching art in Chicago Public Schools. She went to college for art and teaching right in downtown Chicago. Ms. Pennell has also been teaching summer art classes for seven years, both with her school and the Chicago Park District. Some of her favorite things in art are to work with clay, and she loves taking photos. She loves all kinds of art and helping others learn to love it too!
ABOUT THE TEACHER (Session 3 & 4)
Mindy Baumgartner is not your typical art teacher. After receiving her Bachelors of Science in Physics and Astronomy, she spent the next 15 years at several prominent science museums. There, she specialized in enriching the museum visitor experience by engaging guests with live STEM content. Although she thrived as a museum educator, Mindy’s ever-present instinct to create drove her to leverage her talents as a maker. She explored further developing skills that would allow her to showcase the intersection of science and art. Aligning with her passion for presenting science as approachable and fun, Mindy’s unique voice is forever at the forefront of each of her artistic endeavors – be they in calligraphy, painting, quilting, crotchet, photography, or a brand new creative adventure. You can check out her art as @CraftyPhysicist on Instagram.
